I went birding on the Ridges in Athens during the sunny (and still chilly) hours around noon today. My goal was to search for the Great Horned Owl that Kyle Brooks had reported — no success. However, I encountered a Barred Owl in the wooded part between Radar Hill and the water tower. I saw it fly to a perch where it stayed just long enough to get my camera ready for a few pictures (see list to eBird list below). There were also two Chipping Sparrows at the feeders near the museum, unusual this time of year. In about 3 hours, I had 30 species!

In the afternoon, I checked a few spots along the Hocking River, which starts to freeze from the borders and has floating chunks of ice. The warm water outflow at the water treatment plant had many Canada Geese and Mallards, and also 3 Pied-billed Grebe, 2 Redheads, 3 Gadwall, a Scaup, and a female Goldeneye. I was surprised to see 2 Great Blue Herons, which have been absent from the river this winter.

Finally, I stopped at the Habitat House across from Whites Mill. About 270 Canada Geese were grazing next to the bike path. Among them 2 Greater White-fronted Geese, quite possibly the same birds that have been seen since February 4. An all-white goose seemed to be a domestic-type Graylag Goose.
