On a road trip this weekend from Columbus to Detroit -- observations from the driver's seat: 2 KestrelsLots of Red Tail HawksLots of Canada Geese -- couldn't see anything but Canada's in these groups -- nothing whiteAll the roadside lakes were frozen -- no waterfowlAdult Bald Eagle in tree at a frozen over borrow pit lake, west side of I-75 near Cygnet OHThe eagle nest Route 68/Route 15 south of Findlay: One bird on the nest and the other in flight nearbyA lot of vultures -- assume they were TV's -- but I was drivingA lot of Red Wing Blackbirds on fence posts in Delaware and Marion Counties. But did not see any from northern Marion County and further north. And the most interesting sighting of all was not in Ohio: While driving on I-94 through metro, highly urbanized Detroit, just north of downtown -- a Ring Necked Pheasant flew over the freeway! This in is a highly urbanized area, mixed commercial and residential -- no parks or golf courses on either side of the road. So I do 2 different areas of Christmas bird count which have pheasant habitat, as well as bird in other areas with pheasant habitat - but never see one until I'm in urbanized Detroit!! Paul Graham
