After reviewing my photos I have to say I was fooled by a tricky Horned Grebe plumage. I guess the ability to broadcast from the lakeshore has its downside too. After blowing up the photos I can see the head is not quite right. In one particular shot, I can clearly see the neck just barely turning reddish and contrasting with the black face. The gold 'horns' are just beginning to show, and look a lot like 'ears', but the rest of the signs are wrong.
My sincere apologies to those who tried this evening. Before mobile tech I would've waited to post. Less speed in this case would have served me better.
