On a spur of the moment decision I headed to Big island Wildlife Area and then on to Killdeer Plains Wildlife Area. Every area with open water was filled with waterfowl. Especially striking was a flock of just shy of 500 Tundra Swans at Pond 27 at Killdeer Plains. The other surprise at Killdeer was the continued presence of the Northern Shrike along CH-71 near CH-108. The shrike put on a show flying from the north to the south side of CH-71. A list of the species observed follows.
