This afternoon I found 3 Glaucous Gulls (GLGU) at Wendy Park out from the
Coast Guard Station. There was one first winter (buffy brownish on white)
and two adult birds. After the Bohemian Waxwing show this morning, I
checked Eastlake PP, E 72nd and 55th Streets, and the river and outlet at
the Coast Guard Station was the best spot for gulls and waterfowl. There
were 20 to 25 Great Black-backed Gulls and lots of Herring and Ring-billed
Gulls near the Coast Guard Station as well as about 8-10 Bonaparte's Gulls
at the sewage treatment plant on the way in to Wendy Park to yield a five
gull day. The river and open water at the outlet at the Coast Guard
Station was filled with thousands of Red-breasted Mergansers, 20+ or more
Common Mergansers as well as Redheads, some Canvasbacks, both scaup and
Ring- necked Ducks and golden-eyes. Apparently, this location has fish and
food seemingly lacking elsewhere at the mentioned birding locations that I
visited today. Thanks to Jen Brumfield for her post about a week ago
mentioning the GLGUs at this location. When the ice recedes, this will
likely not last very long.
