An interesting Red-shouldered hawk adaptive behavior in Mansfield (Richland Co.) Sunday afternoon. As I was walking to my vehicle that was parked in a box lot parking lot I saw the bird fly across a busy four lane street from a suburban riparian area and land atop a mexican restaraunt. It then proceeded to make a dive behind a fence at the restaraunt out of sight, intrigued at what the hawk must be hunting or feeding on I proceeded to drive around to the other side of the fence and found the bird dumpster diving and retrieving chicken bone scraps and scavaging from them while perched on the edge of the dumpster. I have seen gulls, crows, herons, starlings etc doing this before but this was a first for this species for me. GC
