This report reminds me of the book I just finished reading: “Welcome to Subirdia: Sharing Our Neighborhoods with Wrens, Robins, Woodpeckers, and Other” by John M. Marzluff.
It is a study of how suburbia has affected birds and other animals.
The author and other researchers found that there are three basic types of behavior: Those that thrive on the new environments. Those that manage to adapt to it. And, those that try to avoid what is happening.
I think the biggest surprise is that there is actually an increase in the number of species in some areas where the suburbanites grow a lot of general landscaping. It creates a patchwork of habitats. Of course, some birds and other wildlife benefit a lot where people provide food, plants and nesting boxes specifically for them. Unfortunately, species like ground nesting thrushes are lost unless there are wooded parks or other areas where they can live. Meadows are also scare.
It is a very interesting book. The author is based in the Pacific Northwest. But, he travels the world for the content of the book. There is also a mention of a research project in Ohio.
