Was just watching the noon news from my couch, always while eyeballing out my big picture window at the wet ag field across the road. This location frequently attracts goodies like geese,, dabblers, shorebirds, gulls, longspurs, pipits, and the occasional eagle and other raptors. Suddenly two large birds flew into view, one chasing the other. Their apparent large size, the deep powerful wing strokes, and agile flight inspired me to bolt to the window, where my binocs always sit. Fortunately, one of them landed in a neighbor's tree, affording me a couple minutes of careful study. The first thing I noticed was a baseball sized clump of bright white fluffed feathers under the tail at the vent area. The back and wings were a uniform dark gray, and the light colored breast suggested an adult. The body was thick and robust giving the bird a very solid appearance. It bird had a fierce look to it, still from the thrill of the chase I suppose. Pretty swell to add a pair of Northern Goshawks to my yard list, eh?
