Forgot to mention that the island in the off-limits quarry visible from
the Shrum Mound in Columbus is populated again by nesting DC cormorants,
GB herons, and great egrets--who come last, and are only now claiming
nest sites. All three species strongly prefer nest sites surrounded by
water, though they may nest where two streams meet. Quite a few mudflats
are exposed nearby, with a few gulls and common shorebirds as desultory
visitors; it looks like there's not much food there, only safe roosting.
Have a look at the Columbus area on Google Earth sometime, to see how
many inaccessible quarry reservoirs pockmark the landscape; there is one
right across the street from the mound on the other side, where a quarry
has been sold to ornament a gated huddle of pricey apartments, and that
may be the final use of most of them in the fullness of time.
