We sure have heard about a lot of Eurasian wigeons this spring; it is
usually rarer than that. Troy Shively sent me a photo of a drake that
seems to be intermediate in plumage---striking cream-colored crown and
pinkish breast, but no facial rufous; it shows no white rump patch, but
it's an iffy photo. The NGS guide opines that Eurasian "hybridizes
regularly with American Wigeon." It would be good if observers could
take extra careful looks at wigeons that show merely a pale yellow
crown, so we'd have a better idea about what's really around. I am
certainly guilty of not checking out this species more carefully when I
see the yellowish forecrown way out in the distance. Has anyone else
noticed hybrids?
