Hi.

The tradition of the April fools posts on the Ohio listserve had been
around almost since the inception of the Listserve by Vic Fazio back in the
1990s. But in recent years it has been beaten into the ground, by a very
small set of individuals, in the guise of "protecting" beginners or others
too gullible to know better.

This is unfortunate as these posts were often very well done and very
entertaining to the point of being hilarious. Stuff like Ivory-billed
Peckerwood is far too obvious to be good. The implausibility was always
over the edge on the best ones. Sometimes there was even collaboration
between birders as with the Boat-billed Heron in the mid 90s

The truth is that only true fools actually fell for these posts, which was
the whole point. If you were sucked in by something as unlikely as a
Great-horned Owl carrying off a German Shepard well...

But this true and real *tradition* of almost 2 decades is now dead because
of a very few, apparently humorless, people, and our Ohio birding community
is a much poorer place because of it.

Such a shame.

Haans
