Thank you all for the suggestions. The bird I saw was definitely was not a
Virginia rail. The bill was smaller like a sora. I'm going to mark this one
down as a sora/rail species. I hope the bird shows itself again and a more
experienced birder can get a picture of it.

I saw a bird this morning at the CVNP Beaver Marsh and I am looking for
assistance in identifying it.
The bird was about 6 inches in size, dark in color, and the bill was short,
thick and dark. It emerged from the reeds for 30-45seconds. I watched it
thru by binoculars. When I reached for my camera it went back in. Over the
next 45 minutes it did not re-appear.
I thought I had finally gotten a glimpse of the Sora. The body shape was
right.
But, tonight as I look thru my book and google images, Sora's are much more
colorful.
Can anyone offer a suggestion on what I may have seen?
