It is presently 4:35PM Thursday afternoon. We are observing a non-breeding plumaged Common Loon at the north end of Salem Reservoir. The unusual Summer visitor has been constantly diving, apparently finding a good food source. Salem Reservoir is located several miles to the northeast of Guilford Lake State Park. A scope is probably necessary with the bird being best seen looking northwest from the bait shop on Gamble Road. There originally was some thought on our part that this bird might be a 1st Spring Red-throated Loon. To us the loon looked slimmer, the bill looked slimmer, and the bill appeared to be constantly upturned. But we concluded Common Loon. If anybody follows up, see what you think.
