Diana & I made a quick day trip up to Oak Openings to experience the unique habitats, focusing on the Oak Openings Preserve (Dunes trail & nearby Girdham Rd) and Kitty Todd Preserve. The open dry oak forest interspersed with savannahs & prairies was much more reminiscent of Missouri or Oklahoma than Ohio. Our targets included both birds and butterflies, and the birds were the more cooperative of the two. Included among our finds were:

Wild Turkey - startled a hen with 8 chicks along the trails at Kitty Todd
Red-headed Woodpeckers - 10+ in the managed oak savannah between the Dunes Trail & Girdham Rd; fewer at Kitty Todd
Flycatchers - Pewees, Phoebes, Acadian, & Gr.Crested all in the woods at the start of the Dunes Trail
Vireos - Red-eyed & Yellow-throated widespread. Also had 1 Blue-headed singing in the pines at start of Dunes Trail
Thrushes - only Wood Thrushes, mostly in the thick woods near Mallard Lake
Warblers - Hooded & Ovenbirds in the woods at both places; Pine warblers (2) in the pines near Mallard Lake. Singing Blue-winged (2) and Yellow-br.Chats (2) along trails at Kitty Todd, which also had Yellow & Redstart

Tanagers - both Scarlets & Summers along the Dunes Trail and along the trails at Kitty Todd
Lark Sparrows - none at Girdham Rd, but a pair was carrying food to an unseen fledgling at Kitty Todd. We could even see them flying out to yards along Old State Rd, so they should be visible to a patient watcher along the roadside.

Icterids - E.Meadowlarks calling near Airport. Also had 4+ Baltimores calling & flying around savannah along Girdham Rd, while an Orchard was singing in the more open prairie at Kitty Todd
