Our visit to The Conneaut Sandspit today, Thursday, from noon to 1PM in pouring down rain, was not as successful as the previous post. What we did find was the sandspit area was over eighty percent under water. A representative of The Conneaut Port Authority informed us the water level of Lake Erie in the harbor area was 20 inches higher than normal, the highest it has been in recent years. If you have birded here in the past, you would be amazed at what you would see. Our only shorebirds were 1 Spotted Sandpiper, 1 Greater Yellowlegs, and 2 Killdeer. 2 Caspian Terns were with Ring-billed and Herring Gulls. Good numbers of Bank Swallows were still at the their colony. 8 Bald Eagles were present. 140+ Double-crested Cormorants were on the break-wall left of the lighthouse. Over 275 Canada Geese were in the harbor. Apparently it is all in the timing of the visit.
