I checked several areas around downtown Columbus this evening, after attending one of the MetroParks Citizen Input Meetings (at Scioto Audubon). Stops at Berliner park, Long St Dam, Broad St., and Bexley yielded a total of 3 birds -- 2 at Berliner, 1 at Long Street Dam. I've not had any big flocks so far this fall, which may suggest that the early wave of Nighthawk migrants has learned to circle around the Columbus urban area. Not much food or roost spots here, and plenty of predators (Cooper's hawks). Perhaps the second wave - usually in mid-September - will have more robust numbers.

On the positive side, Chimney Swift numbers seem OK. 260-270 birds were seen swirling into the Drexel Theater chimney in Bexley this evening, and another large flock was milling around northeast of downtown Columbus (Nationwide & 5th).
