Ed just observed a juvenile, dark Swainson's Hawk at the corner of Township Road 401 & Rt 39 between Sugar Creek & Berlin. This bird was reported as a possible Jaeger last night and rediscovered & identified this morning at 11:00 by Ed as the bird walked throughout the field at the SW corner of Rt 39 & TR 401 eating grasshoppers. The bird then lifted off and flew just north of Rt 39 over TR 401 where Ed watched it leisurely flying low over the area, sometimes with Turkey Vultures for over 45 minutes until he had to go back to work at 12:00. Ed said the bird showed no signs of leaving the area. Ed is one of Ohio's most experienced hawk watchers and reports this is his 6th Swainson's sighting in Ohio. Of course all the other sightings were of birds migrating over and all the other 5 were in spring. This is off the top of my head an unprecedented stay for this species in Ohio and Ed says birders are welcome to come search the area.Kent Miller
