Many thanks to the folks who have looked for and found some nighthawk
flights recently. Fall soccer games provide some marginal foraging for
nighthawks, and it could be worthwhile to glance up for them.
As I mentioned before, there seems to be something magical about
today--3 September--for peak numbers: Columbus had "at least several
thousand" on 9/3/68, 3,000+ on 98/3/76, and ~2500 on 9/3/92. I believe
we hold the record for the state's latest nighthawk--11/20/756, flying
and calling over High Street on the north side.
Anyway, the thoughtful observations and remarks are valuable.
Thanks,
Bill Whan
