At Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in n.w. Ohio, a small amount of good
shorebird habitat persists on Pool 2C - the second impoundment to the
north of the old parking lot. See map at this link:

I checked on the shorebird situation yesterday evening, Sept. 23. The open
mudflats and shallow water are mostly in the southeastern corner of Pool
2C, but some shorebirds are also frequenting shallow waters halfway up the
east side of that impoundment and a few other open spots. There seems to be
a lot of turnover, perhaps with birds moving off to inaccessible parts of
the refuge. Some birds were arriving and departing from the visible areas
of 2C while I was there, and later I talked with a birding couple who had
been there early afternoon yesterday and had seen very little. Nonetheless,
yesterday evening I had 11 species of shorebirds on Pool 2C. Highlights
included 3 Stilt Sandpipers, one juvenile Dunlin (the first juvenile I'd
seen this fall), and good scope studies of 18 Long-billed Dowitchers,
almost all juveniles. Historically, this area (the western Lake Erie marsh
region) has been the best place in Ohio to find Long-billed Dowitcher, and
the prime season is right now, late September through October.
