This morning we awoke (5:45 or so) to what I reckon was a courtship duet of
great horned owls. There were definitely two of them, and closer to our
farmhouse than I have heard in previous years. They sang E-flat and a minor
third higher G-flat, sometimes overlapping, (quite charming,) and rather
incessantly for fifteen minutes or so, until we got up and turned on some
lights. (I checked the pitches on the piano.)

In other nearby raptor news, I saw a bald eagle as I drove on I-70
westbound on Thursday morning, around 10:40. This was one of the Buckeye
Lake area eagles. I was around mile marker 131, and the sky had numerous
turkey vultures circling. But the large, dark bird with the flatter wing
aspect stood out, Then I noticed the white head as well. It made me smile,
as did this morning's owls.
