I birded several areas around the eastern portion of this south Columbus Park this morning for a few hours, finding lots of temperate migrants, mostly in fields and field edge areas. I visited Heron Pond, the Confluence area, the Confluence Trail & Borrow Pits, and Elk Run Park. The overgrown fields of Heron Pond and Elk Run were the most productive spots. Included among the list were:

Great Egrets - still 2 of them working the borrow pits along the Multi-Use Alum Creek Trail
Waterfowl - these same ponds had 30 Mallards, 22 Green-winged Teal, and 1 wigeon
Vultures - small #s roosting or soaring in many locations. Heron Pond had the most, with 36.
Woodpeckers - no sapsuckers, but lots of flickers in all the locations, and 2 Pileated @ the borrow pit
Wrens - Carolinas were widespread, but also had a Winter Wren at Turtle Pond in the Confluence area
Kinglets - had 2 Ruby-crowns in the Confluence area, but no Golden-crowns at any location.
E.Bluebirds - several flyovers, which is usually indicative of the start of their migration here
Thrushes - nothing but Robins, but they were abundant, with small flocks in many locations.
GrayCatbird - 1 was ensconced in honeysuckle bushes along the Confluence Trail
Cedar Waxwings - lots of small flocks, topped by 60+ at the Confluence area
Warblers - Yellow-rumps were common and widespread, but also had Palm (Heron Pond), Orange-crowned (Heron Pond), and ComYellowthroat (Elk Run).

Sparrows - 9 species, with Song & White-throated the most common. Most unusual were widespread Swamp Sparrows and a single Lincoln's (Elk Run).

Blackbirds - lots of small flyover Redwing flocks early. Also had single grackles and cowbirds at several locations.

Finches - nothing other than the expected House Finches and Goldfinches.
