LeConte's Sparrow this morning at about 9:00 am at Ellis Lake at Firebird
Lane west of I-75 north of Cincinnati. Great views and good photos by me,
Jeremy Dominguez and Daniel DeLapp, a lifer for Daniel! At the north end of
Firebird Lane look north west. The bird was in the west end of the only
visible willow clump way out in the field. To get there take a visible
birder and deer trail down the bank on the left/west side of the circle at
the end of Firebird Lane and walk north through the short grass on the west
side of the wet/muddy channel and turn west and continue along a similar
wet/muddy chanel to the willows. LeConte's was first reported on eBird on
10/18/15 by Steve Pellikan and Mike Busam but directions to this exact
location were not specific in eBird. Mike Busam gave me this location last
night. We easily saw and photographed the orange supercillium, the white
medium crown stripe and purplish pink nape streaks at close range, approx
10 feet and other field marks. Another LeConte's reported on eBird last
night at Ellis Lake by Andrew Cannizzaro but at a different location,
likely several LeConte's at Ellis Lake. Lots of other sparrows at Ellis
Lake and along the way to the willow location. Also saw and photographed
Sedge Wren west of willows along ditch. Lots of great habitat. Get there
early by 8:00-8:30 am!
