I stopped by this isolated urban woodland in Columbus yesterday afternoon and was surprised at the variety of birds still foraging around the forest. Included with the regular chickadees and woodpeckers were
2 Blue Headed Vireos
3 Ruby-crowned Kinglets
4 Yellow-rumped Warblers
1 Chipping Sparrow
1 Swamp Sparrow
6 Song Sparrows
5 White-throated Sparrows
1 Fox Sparrow

This was a quick survey of only 30 minutes; if I had had more time, the list probably would've been longer.

I hadn't noticed any 'fallouts' at other spots yesterday or the day before, so I assume these birds have accumulated there over the past few days. I suspect it may have to do with the bug populations here; the park had many more flying gnats, bugs, and butterflies than other suburban parks. In just 30 minutes, I had 6 species of butterflies (CabbageWhite, Clouded Sulphur, Orange Sulphur, PearlCrescent, Buckeye, Monarch). The park is 'encased' by urban neighborhoods, and may not have experienced much of the killing frosts that decimated insect populations elsewhere in central Ohio. Birders might want to visit such urban oases in the nest week to check for similar windfalls.
