I visited this part of Big Island this morning. Shorebird numbers weren’t high, and it was hard to get counts with the poor light and the birds moving about, but at least a few White-Rumped Sandpipers, two dowitchers (Long-Billed, I think), several Pectoral Sandpipers, and a few L. Yellowlegs were present. There was also one bird with an intriguing facial pattern (dark comma-shaped mark behind the eye). I’m still pondering my photos but so far it looks possible in other respects for juvenile Red Phalarope, so if you’re heading up that way you might want to keep an eye out for it.
