Hi,

It is fun seeing the reports of first of season Juncos from around the
state. Here on the front of the Allegheny Plateau in NE Ohio (Lake Geauga,
Ashtabula, western Cuyahoga and northern Summit) where Dark-eyed Juncos are
prolific nesters, I have a somewhat different perspective.

I wonder how to sort out year round residents from migrants. Local bird
banders report re catching birds they have banded in spring and summer in
winter, so there are year round residents for sure. But there must be
migrant populations as well. Yet that said in terms of overall numbers
they seem stable year round. There are times in mid June, when Juncos are
the predominant species in my yard. Then the same may be true in winter.
Additionally we have female Juncos year round although they are always less
conspicuous, preferring to stick to brushy areas and shrubberies.

All in all these are remarkable little birds and fun to have around
