Speaking of rare waterfowl, Jerry McWilliams does a waterbird survey at
Presque Isle in Pennsylvania similar to what I do from my house. Today at
Presque isle he had 2,600 long-tailed ducks. They occasionally get high
numbers annually there. At Long Point Ontario just across the lake they
also get large numbers of them. It is interesting the large difference
between how many are seen there and in Ohio. Earlier this week the count at
Presque Isle had red-throated loons outnumbering common loons 18 to 8. The
deeper waters east of Presque Isle and Long point may be the key. I have
watched from Conneaut and have seen almost no red-throated loons. Conneaut
is only 26 miles away from Presque Isle.
