I had perched Merlins in two very different locations around Columbus today. The first was on a power line pylon out in the farm fields near Darree Fields Park on the far west side of Dublin. Later in the afternoon, I had another perched on a tree along Old Ridenour Road in Gahanna, a NE suburb of Columbus. Not only were they far apart, but they had different plumage characters (the Gahanna bird was noticeably darker on head & back), so it's extremely likely that they represent different birds.

This comes less than 2 weeks after I saw 2 different Merlins on the Hoover CBC, both found perched on phone poles along Spring St. in suburban Westerville by Lynn Champney. This influx of Merlins doesn't correlate with any obvious weather change or bird change. The past 2 weeks have been wet & mild here, and haven't had any major weather changes or influxes of birds. Birders here should be alert for perched Merlins over the next few weeks.
