This morning after seeing the Kelp Gull at Springfield Lake (Lakemore Recreational Park) in Summit county, Ben Morrison, Kent Miller, and I headed toward southern Stark County to try to find where the flocks of gulls are heading after lifting off in the morning, as they always go south.

We arrived at a spot on the west side of I-77 on Sherman Church and saw thousands of gulls streaming from the north by us heading into the landfill on the east side of I-77. This spot gives a decent view, but you're looking toward the sun. A Glaucous Gull looking like the one at Springfield was seen flying with the RBGUs.

We headed north from there and turned right on to Haut heading east. From an area where Haut veers off to the north and the road becomes Downing SW you can see a great deal of the landfill to the south and the birds streaming by are much better lit. We spoke with a homeowner there and let him know that folks there may be seeing birders looking at gulls and the landfill in the coming days/weeks. He was intrigued by the possibility of this gull visiting his neck of the woods.

We are calculating that the best times to be at Downing/Haut would likely be by 7:30 am for southbound movement and 3:30 pm for northbound movement, but you would have better light at this time of day back on Sherman Church looking east.

We believe this is an area that could very well be the daily feeding spot of this gull, as well as the landfill by Waynesburg in Stark Co.
