Yesterday (Friday, 1/29) we birded the Grand Rapids stretch of the Maumee River from Otsego Park to Mary Jane Thurston Park. At Otsego Park we saw two Iceland Gulls. The viewing is a bit distant and a scope is definitely required. We also had one Glaucous flying overhead when the gulls all lifted off the river for some reason. 5-6 miles away, and after going through the small town of Grand Rapids we came to Mary Jane Thurston Park. The Grand Rapids dam is seen from this park. There, right on the dam, we had a very white, juvenile Glaucous Gull. This bird stayed at the dam's edge the entire time we were there. We had 13 Lesser Black-backed Gulls there. The viewing here was much closer, but a scope is still required. We were unable to locate the Thayer's Gull that has been seen and photographed in that stretch of the Maumee River. There are currently more gulls here than alone the south shore of Lake Erie. As the ice melts, the gulls will probably disperse.

Good Gulling
