At 4:00 pm I heard sandhills off to the west of our home south of Wilmington.  I drove over to Lake Cowan but it appeared that they had flown on.  In years past, before the state upgraded the boat piers and marina, the water was let down much lower and the cranes almost always stopped in overnight.  But no longer.
Just short of home at 5:00 pm 16 Sandhill Cranes passed over my car heading south by southwest, possibly for East Fork.
