This morning, the female Merlin returned to our yard in Athens. Pictures (see eBird checklist link) show some bloody feathers on its beak, indicating that it had had its breakfast already.

A surprise was a Ruby-crowned Kinglet in the spruce tree in front of our house. This species is rare here in Ohio in the Winter. eBird has only 3 more winter sightings in Athens, from Feb 1990, Dec 1992, and Dec 2004.
