With inland ponds and lakes freezing over, my local birding attention has turned to the Mahoning R., which has never frozen over in my 13 years here.  Birding there was good today, with: 55 Canada geese, Am. black duck, 35 mallards, 2 ring-necked ducks, greater scaup, 14 hooded mergansers, 2 bald eagles, 30 ring-billed gulls, Am. robin, and song sparrow.  Craig Holt, Lowellville
