Yesterday (25FEB), during a light snow shower in the early afternoon, we
spotted a Northern Shrike (Lanius excubitor) here in south central Huron
County. The bird was perched in the very top of a small hardwood in the
center of a wildlife conservation area at our preserve. That area is covered
with small scrub trees and shrubs as well as sizable openings .a typical
hunting area for that species. The solitary bird was perched in a horizontal
position. All identifiable field marks were present. Shrikes are not common
here in the northern part of the state making this experience a rare treat
for us.
