This upcoming lecture might be of interest to Ohio birders and conservationists.

The annual William and Nancy Klamm Memorial lecture at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History is this Friday, March 11 at 7:00 and features internationally renowned conservationist, Dr. George Archibald, Co-founder and Senior Conservationist at the International Crane Foundation. Dr. Archibald will be speaking on Cranes: Ambassadors for Biodiversity and Goodwill.

Majestic and lovely, cranes have, since time untold, evoked the emotions and imaginations of humans. Unfortunately, the actions of mankind now threaten 11 of the Earth's 15 species of cranes. Founded in 1973, and based in central Wisconsin, the International Crane Foundation has a worldwide program to help cranes and use the charisma of cranes to conserve wetlands, grasslands, watershed and flyways and to promote goodwill among the nations that share these special birds. Dr. Archibald will chronicle his life with cranes and share the global work of the International Crane Foundation in creating a brighter future for these amazing birds.

Archibald is an icon of avian and wetland conservation and his work has helped all 15 species of cranes and the wetland ecosystems which are critical for their survival. Born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, Canada, Archibald received his undergraduate degree from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1968, and completed his Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1977. In recognition of his many accomplishments, Archibald has received four honorary doctorates and many awards including the Gold Medal from the World Wildlife Fund, a Fellows Award from the MacArthur Foundation, The Wildlife Conservation Medal from the Zoological Society of San Diego, the Lilly Medal presented by the Indianapolis Zoo, and the Douglas H. Pimlott Award from Nature Canada. In 2013, Archibald was awarded the Order of Canada on behalf of Queen Elizabeth II, and received the inaugural Dan W. Lufkin Prize for Environmental Leadership from the National Audubon Society. He and his wife, Kyoko, live in the Baraboo countryside where they enjoy gardening and aviculture.
