This morning, Sunday, about 10:15AM, rewarding birds were found at the US224 Causeway at Berlin Lake. Highlights were 2 Red-throated Loons to the north in Mahoning County, and a gorgeous pair of Surf Scoters to the southwest in Portage County. 17 Common Loons were seen at various locations from the causeway, most in breeding plumage. Cliff Swallows have returned to their traditional Mahoning County nesting site under the causeway bridge. 150+ Bonaparte's Gulls were on the south side in one group on the water. The Osprey pair are back on their tower pole nest to the northeast. Other birds of interest were 4 Ruddy Ducks, 7 Red-breasted Mergansers, and a pair of Hooded Mergansers. As the day progresses, numerous boats will become a problem for the birds. A scope is necessary at this birding site. For whatever reason, the access gates to The Berlin Lake Dam on Bonner Road were closed, even though a sign said they were to be open. As of yesterday we are back to our Mahoning-Columbiana County stomping grounds.
