My visit today, Thursday, was from about 4PM to about 5PM. Weather conditions were brutal, with wind, rain, and a forty-two degree temperature. The water level of Lake Erie appeared extremely high. The access gate to drive out to the sandspit was closed. Viewing with a scope was from the gazebo at the township park on the bluff to the west, and the marina road to the east. My highlight was seeing 104 Caspian Terns hunkered down on the sandspit with the company of 2 Forster's Terns. Some of the other birds around the harbor were a single female Common Merganser, a single adult Bald Eagle, 120+ Double-crested Cormorants on the breakwall, and 40+ Red-breasted Mergansers in the bay. A disappointing sight was seeing that the aggregate pile that had been home to the enormous Bank Swallow colony, is gone.
