I noticed a report of a Kirtland's warbler from Florida yesterday. This
is certainly a reminder to look out for them here just now. It is a
really good find in Florida this time of year, even though it has spent
the winter not far away. These warblers almost always take off and fly
for just about as long as it takes to get to Ohio, which explains why we
have more Kirtland's records than any place south of Michigan, including
Florida. A better percentage of the Ohio sightings come from
the lakeside counties, perhaps because this is the latitude at which the
birds are running low on energy and set down for a rest before resuming
a trip over Lake Erie. Bahamas to Michigan in a day and a half.
