This morning, Friday, from about 7:30AM to about 9:30AM, myself along with Jeff Harvey, birded the general area around The US224 Causeway. The lake to the north and the south of the causeway was as calm as it ever gets. The highlight of our visit was a raft of 33 Common Loons to the southeast, in the Mahoning County corner of the lake toward the campground. Some of the other birds of interest were Horned Grebe, Lesser Scaup, Red-breasted Merganser, Bonaparte's Gull, Spotted Sandpiper, and Osprey. The loons were best viewed from the park area off of Bedell Road to the east. Some of the woodland birds seen were Baltimore Oriole, Louisiana Waterthrush, Red-headed Woodpecker, Warbling Vireo, Wood Thrush, and Eastern Towhee. Excellent numbers of Cliff Swallows are nest building at The US224 Causeway Bridge, the old railroad bridge on The Berlin Lake Trail, and on the Berlin Lake Dam off Bonner Road.
