I revisited the Common Loon again this evening along with a few others. It
was still there as of 7:15, easy views at point blank range. Like I said,
no binoculars needed as you could easily view it from your car if you didn't
want to get out of it. A couple notes:
* Retention Pond is actually on the south side of GetGo between
GetGo and I-90. I originally said north side. Sorry about that.
* The Loon is showing some interesting behavior. It's swimming very
low in the water, sometimes barely showing its head. I've seen this
behavior before with Anhingas, but never with a loon. I'm not sure if
that's because it's stressed, or if that's a defense behavior that I just
haven't seen and the loon is using it because of the small body of water
that it's on right now.
* Retention pond is probably only 30 yards long by less than 10
yards wide. I know loons need a long "run way" to take off, so I'm not sure
if there is enough space for it to leave the pond or not. We had this issue
in Avon Lake a few years ago just a few miles north of this location with a
loon stuck on a pond on Sweetbriar Golf Course.
I took my kids and sent my neighbor's kids there as well. Good opportunity
for the kids to see a spectacular species at very close range. I hope it's
able to eventually take off from those tight quarters.
