APRIL 02, 2016 - CUYAHOGA VALLEY MONTHLY TOWPATH TRAIL CENSUS.HIKE: Red Lock Trailhead south to Merriman Valley. TIME: 7:00am-3:35pm TEMP.: 38-51-40COND.: Cloudy & windy, winds W at 5-15mph, gusting to 20mph; turning partly sunny until 1:30pm, then cloudingback up, with rain/snow mix from 2:50pm until end of census.TRAIL COND.: Fair - usual puddles & mud on last leg from Botzum to Merriman Valley.RIVER COND.: High, swift & muddy from 04/01 rains.FT.MI.: 13.85 OBS.: John Henry & Douglas W. Vogus.
I. MAMMALS: 6 SPECIES.   
   - Eastern Gray Squirrel - 1   

   - Eastern Fox Squirrel - 1
   - Red Squirrel - 13
   - Muskrat - 1
   - Eastern Cottontail - 1
   - White-tailed Deer - 6 (doe)

II. BIRDS: 49 SPECIES, 593 INDIVIDUALS, 1 SPECIES NEW TO CENSUS.(NOTE: ? = bird was seen but not sexed; * = bird was heard calling but not sexed)   
   - Canada Goose - 77 (4 nests)   

   - Trumpeter Swan - 2 (at Ira Beaver Marsh - New Species on Census - now 178  total species since 01/2010)
   - Wood Duck - 16 (9m,6f,1?)
   - American Black Duck - 1 (m)
   - Mallard - 22 (15m,7f)
   - Ring-necked Duck - 2 (1m,1f)
   - Pied-billed Grebe - 1
   - Great Blue Heron - 34
   - Turkey Vulture - 11
   - Cooper's Hawk - 1 (f)
   - Red-shouldered Hawk - 1
   - Red-tailed Hawk - 6 (1 nest)
   - Killdeer - 4
   - Ring-billed Gull - 2
   - Mourning Dove - 6
   - Belted Kingfisher - 4 (2m,1?,1*)
   - Red-bellied Woodpecker - 9 (3m,2f,4*)
   - Downy Woodpecker - 9 (2m,4f,1?,2*)
   - Hairy Woodpecker - 3 (1f,2*)

   - Northern Spring Peeper - 9 (heard only)   

   - Western Chorus Frog - 1 (heard only)
