This is not a report of a sighting, so you can delete this now if you are not interested in a quick impression of the new Second Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Ohio.

When I arrived home yesterday, my copy had arrived. I ordered it directly from the Penn State Press and it shipped quickly and came well packed. I’m not sure how much this book weighs, but it is definitely one of the biggest books that I now own.

I want to say first that over the past year I have been rather critical of the amount of time it has taken for this to come out. Frankly, I was impatient and really did not understand the amount of data that was being crunched to deliver us the results of the hard, VOLUNTARY field work done by so many outstanding birders across the state of Ohio. If I ever made any comment that offended the editors or volunteers of this remarkable resource I sincerely apologize. Great work folks!

The editors of this have done what appears to be an absolutely wonderful job on this book and it is WELL WORTH THE WAIT. It is aesthetically beautiful, arranged pragmatically, and contains enough information to keep a strong reader busy for months or much longer.

I have obviously not yet explored the information in depth, so I cannot report on the minutia, but if the overall impression of the book holds I think this is worth far more than the asking price. If you are a newer birder like me, this is a must have for more reasons than I can list here. If you are an experienced birder in Ohio you already know that this is an important continuing exploration of the status birds of Ohio and the very real threats that they face today and into the future. The information found in these pages could very well help drive the preservation of important habitat across our state.

To put it into the jargon of our chosen avocation: This is a mega-rarity that you absolutely must chase and not dip on.
