A late day tour of the auto drive today, Saturday, from 4:15PM to 6:45PM was very rewarding. We recorded fifty-tthree species of birds. MS6, on the southwest corner of Ottawa Lucas County Road and Stange Road, in Ottawa County, provided the highlight of the day, a single Marbled Godwit, plus Dunlins, Semipalmated Plovers, Semipalmated Sandpipers, Killdeer, Least Sandpipers, and Caspian Terns. The remainder of the birds were seen in the Lucas County sections. From the previous location mentioned, looking across the dike to the north into MS3, we viewed a pair of Sandhill Cranes with a single tiny colt swimming along behind mom and dad, who were both wading. Also here was a late Horned Grebe in breeding plumage along with a single Gadwall. Continuing the drive to the east in MS5 was a male American Wigeon and a Black-crowned Night-Heron. Following the outside perimeter roads looking west from North Estuary Road into Pool 3 were 32 male Wood Ducks with no females. From Trumpeter Trail looking to the north, the Cliff Swallow colony on the Metzger Marsh control structure could be seen. Continuing along Metzger Marsh Drive were numerous Marsh Wrens and Swamp Sparrows, a Sora, a White-crowned Sparrow, and a Common Nighthawk, just to name some of the species seen today. The most unusual sighting of the day was a Pink Flamingo in Lucas County, that could be viewed with a spotting scope looking west down the Ottawa Lucas County Road Dike, from the Marbled Godwit site. Looking down the dike to the far end of MS3, scope sweep a short distance to the right to a dirt pile, check out the right side of it. The tour of the auto drive was a fun way to end the day.
