Sorry for the late post, but we've been entertaining visiting relatives. During the visit, however, we took them on a hike at this newly-opened State Nature Preserve down near Lancaster. It has a long trail that follows an old logging road up Arney Run for nearly a mile before making two loops up the western ridge of the valley. The forest is rich here, both in plants and birds, and we had a great hike. In about 2.5 hours we had

3-4 Yellow-billed Cuckoos
Many WoodPewees & Acadians, fewer Great Cresteds and E.Kingbirds
2 Yellow-throated and 30+ Red-eyed Vireos
10+ Swainsons and 8+ Wood Thrushes
16 warbler species, including Parula, Worm-eating, Tennessee, Magnolia, Chesnut-sided, Black-thr.Blue, Blackburnian, Yellow-throated, Black&White, AmerRedstart, Ovenbirds (many), LaWaterthrush, Kentucky, Hooded, Canada, ComYellowthroat
8-9 Scarlet Tanagers
4-5 Indigo Buntings and 3 Rose-br.grosbeaks

Birds weren't the only treat. There was also a fresh hatch of both Tiger Swallowtails and Spring Azures, and we also had blooming Pink Lady's Slippers.
