I was birding the paths south and north of Lake Snowden dam in Athens County this morning, with more than 50 species in four and a half hours.

A highlight were a Common Gallinule (flagged as ‘rare’ in eBird) in a small patch of reed and willow just as you walk up the grassy path to the dam. I had good close looks from the top of the dam, and could see the bird’s red shield and bill with yellow tip, white flank stripe, the giant green feet with widened toes that were red at their upper end.

Another surprise was a Common Loon. It was swimming quite close to the dam, apparently avoiding the fisher boats farther out, and allowing good views and some pictures. It was not in adult breeding plumage.

A Willow Flycatcher was making an impression near the parking area at the Hocking College Fish Hatchery, singing in plain view from a power line. A Double-crested Cormorant flew over. A Purple Martin was repeatedly dropping a rather large prey item (maybe a cicada?), then catching it again while flying. A singing Yellow-breasted Chat was graciously allowing unobstructed views and some pictures.

Keep birding—
Stefan
