A Least Tern was found this morning at the Sandusky Harbor Marina by Kurt Wray who reported it to the Ohio Rare Birds Facebook group, along with a diagnostic photo. Other excellent photos of this rare Ohio visitor have been posted here by Kurt since his original report. The bird was seen/reported by a few others later in the day, so it may still be there, or in the area, tomorrow morning. As the Marina is gated and available only to members and invited guests, the next best public viewing location is from Lions Park, just to the West of the marina, where the tern was occasionally seen flying along the inside of the marina breakwall. This viewing location, however, is from a pretty long distance and a scope would likely be needed for a positive ID as three or four other Ohio tern species are possible here, and more likely. Great patience may also be necessary for seeing the diagnostic field marks, required for the positive ID of such a small bird. Lions Park is located on the W side of Sandusky, not far from Turning Point Island; a rookerie for Great Blue Herons, several Egret species, and both of our more common Ohio gulls.
Good Birding,
