The Time And Optics Fling, hosted by Robert Hershberger, was held on Friday and Saturday. Over 450 birders were in attendance between the two day event. Representatives from the major optics companies had more scopes and binoculars on display than can be imagined. A semicircle of spotting scopes set up side by side for viewing, provided the opportunity for comparisons of the different brands. Numerous other birding related displays provided information on organizations, books, bird art, and nest boxes, just to name a few. Numerous door prizes were given out on the hour. Live birds on display included Great Horned Owl, Black Vulture, Barn Owl, and Peregrine Falcon. A highlight for visitors was having the opportunity, all day, both days, to rub elbows with the internationally acclaimed birder, photographer, and award-winning author, Richard Crossley. Numerous field trip opportunities were offered during the event to locales such as Mohican, The Wilderness Center, Killbuck, Funk Bottoms, Local Farms, and Leihley Hill. These locations produced a total of over 150 bird species. My involvement was with The Leihley Hill Tours, which recorded around 70 species total. Visual avian highlights for the participants on these tours were Barn Owl, Cliff Swallow, Blue Grosbeak, Lark Sparrow, Grasshopper Sparrow, Black Vulture, Dickcissel, and Bobolink, just to name a few. Of special interest in a nearby barn, was a well documented Cliff Swallow/Barn Swallow hybrid. Another great, annual, birding social event, comes to an end.
