Last night at dusk, as the din died down from the periodic cicada
emergence, you could still hear the cuckoos discussing their feast here on
Flint Ridge in western Muskingum Co. It is difficult, but possible, to hear
the cuckoos through the din in the middle of the day. I usually encounter
or perceive these mostly hidden birds only a few times during a season. But
their calls have been a regular feature since the cicadas emerged in
numbers last Saturday. It's a little surprising (and interesting) how many
cuckoos there are, judging by the voices.
