Hello All . . . Upon examining some excellent photos of these two ducks, it appears that their hind toes are 'intact' and not clipped as I had previously thought. Also, there are no leg bands or other signs of their having been captive birds. They are quite approachable, but that is not uncommon for this species. They do remain wary and do not approach people, as is common with birds that have been fed by humans.
Directions: From St. Paris, about 12 miles West of Urbana, turn North at the Valero gas station. Kiser Lake is 3-4 miles North. When you see the lake ahead, the road bends sharply to the right. Later it bends sharply to the left. You will see a campground on your left, along the lake, and the beach is just beyond. The birds have been hanging out along the beach. This AM they were with 4 Canada Geese, but the geese had left by noon. The birds were last reported just offshore at about 1:15 PM as swimmers/sunbathers were arriving at the beach.
Best of luck in re-finding these rare Ohio birds!
