We birded Big Island wildlife area from 8-11am today. There was a large
mixed group of shorebirds in the central pond just north of LaRue-Prospect
Rd. that was readily observed with scopes by walking north along the dike
on the east side of the pond. Shorebird species observed were:
Killdeer (25+)
Semipalm plover (3)
Lesser yellowlegs (30+)
Solitary sandpiper (8)
Least sandpiper (30+)
Pectoral sandpiper (40+)
Stilt sandpiper (2)
Short-billed Dowitcher (3)
Other good sightings:
Bald eagle - 8 immatures sitting in a row on log in pond
Caspian tern - one flying over ponds
Yellow-billed cuckoo - one flew in and perched in tree in front of our car
while we were eating lunch.
Savannah sparrow - 3 in tall weeds along dike
