Saturday evening we took a walk in Area N to determine the status of the water level to see whether we can begin performing maintenance on the Prothonotary Warbler nest boxes. The water at Hoover Reservoir has been high most of the year and there is little shorebird habitat. We did not expect to see any Prothonotaries as they generally leave for their wintering grounds by the end of July with only a few immatures still in the area. We were surprised to find several males, a female and four fledglings that were chasing the adults looking for a handout. The end of summer is the back to school sales and the departure south of the PROWs.
Other species observed included a Northern Water-thrush, Cedar Waxwings, 6 Red-headed Woodpeckers, 4 Belted Kingfishers, 4 Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, 1 Black-billed Cuckoo, 4 Yellow-billed Cuckoos, 5 Osprey, a Great Egret, 4 Green Herons, 6 Least Sandpipers, a Solitary Sandpiper, a Caspian Tern and 5 Common Terns.
